They decapped the chip and then read off the bits from the ROM in a microscope. I don't think anybody documented how they did it anywhere unfortunately.

I have my Santaclautch running (albeit just for a few more days, he's a couple days late but he WILL be delivering his presents!) and my Osutchi/Mesutchi. Hopefully I'm able to keep them going once work starts up again next week!
