Puzzle pieces are required to obtaining the characters tama-tomo. You can see them in the notebook icon in the first option. The amount of tama tomos you have unlocks locations. pLus, they are like the "mission" of the game. I challenged myself to get them all :)

I don't think they get mad if you don't fullfill their wish. The ask for playing time, or redecoration and stuff like that. It is just a cute feature to make them seem more "alive" and interactive.
