Well, I only know that for Tamagotchi Friends turns into a blank with your pet walking around in it and you just press any key to restart it.

The screen won't turn off unless you remove the batteries and the background won't disappear after a while as there is no background on those versions.
If you mean you can't see your tamagotchi on the screen but it's still functioning then that would be the lights turning off as that would be the only time you can't see it. On the V3 you turn the lights off yourself and on the V4.5 it's automatic.
