If it says V8 it a fake. Bandai has only gone up to V5. And don't buy it if it has JD on it either.

"Tamagotchi" is a Bandai product name. Any product not made by Bandai is not a Tamagotchi, it's just a virtual pet. Notice that ebay sellers often list products as "Tamagotchi" when the package clearly has something else written on it. JD & TS are two companies which make virtual pets often listed on ebay as "Tamagotchi." Genuine Tamagotchi products will have the red & white BANDAI (or BAN DAI) logo on the package.

Another tip. If the screen shows characters that have either four pixels to one or the pixels are just too large, it's a fake. OK, OK, I know this'll not help much, but also check the games. If it doesn't have a list, it's fake. If it has, investigate further to confirm it's not fake.
