How to Get Certain Characters

I've discovered how to get certain charcters in V4 and V4.5, but I'm lost on how to get certain characters in V2 and V3... Is it based soley on Happiness and Hunger? Or is there more to it? I'm asking, because on my V2 I have a Hotodetchi (flower-looking toddler)and I'd like to get a Ringotchi or an Ichigotchi for a teen. And from those two, would it be possible to get a Kuchipatchi or a Memetchi??? Then on my V3, I've got a Tamatchi, and I'd like a Hinotamatchi for a teen... and I'm not sure what adult I want on that one.... Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated.
