Well, apparently, I'm hopeless at counting. 
I tried counting to 9 as you suggested, but I must be counting either too fast or too slow, because it rarely works for me. I find it's MUCH easier just to play the game normally, pressing a button when the two match, period.
But thanks for the tip, even if it doesn't work for me!

I have to try that out.
One time I was playing it, then the phone rang and I forgot about the game. I came back a few minutes later and it said my tama passed the last one and it was doing the next one. Maybe if you wait a long time & don't click, it should work also?
