It looks like it's been well used! It's a classic 96-97 version, looks like to me. Second Generation. One of the original US tamagotchi's. Lucky you! Wish I had had the brains to hang on to my originals. See here: https://www.tamenagerie.com/gen2.html. I'm guessing yours is the Second generation, because generation 1 had a checkerboard background. Generation 2 had the wavy background.

Batteries should be LR44's.
