Only those Tamagotchis that you connect with using the infrared port will show up on the friends list.

On KeiTamas and EnTamas (both are Japanese Tamagotchis) the matchmaker-supplied mate will appear in the family list, after your current Tamagotchi character leaves the baby. On Japanese Tamagotchis, you can see both mother and father in the family list.
