Mesutchi/Osutchi won't connect

My Mesu/Osu pair are 6 years old today and ready to marry. When I select the icon, they start doing their little "mating dance" around the screen, but I can't get them to connect properly. I took off the covers, connected the tops, and pressed B, but they don't seem to register that they're connected. They just go on doing the "dance," and pressing buttons does nothing.

Any idea what's causing this? The batteries are new, and this is the first time these Tamas have ever been run. I've had no issues before this.

Update: It turns out the batteries may have been the problem after all. I changed them (very carefully), and there was no problem connecting after that.

Glad you solved your problem. I was going to suggest cleaning the contacts with a little alcohol on a swab. Mine wouldn't connect with new batteries in, but after cleaning the contacts, they connected just fine.
