They must be at least 6 years old, adults, and the opposite gender of each other.

Just a few more things to add to what NintenNerd already wrote:

If one is a senior (Otokitchi or Ojitchi) then s/he will mate only with another senior of the opposite gender.

Even if the characters are suitable for mating, it could be that they don't love each other. Just keep connecting them. Within about 20 connections, their relationship level should reach high enough that they'll fall in love and mate.

Yes, V4 and V4.5 can mate but you need to remember this.

• Both Tamagotchi's need to have 4 loves hearts on the friend list. ♥♥♥♥
  
• Both Tamagotchi's need to be atleast 4.
  
• Tamagotchi's need to be opposite gender of each other.
  
• If one is an old timer and the other is an adult, they can't mate.
  
• They both need to be adults.
  
• You can use the love potion to mate them. (Optional) The code for the love potion on V4 is CCBA AABB and for the V4.5, the code is BBAA ABCB.

Also one of the IR connectors could be damaged, as I've been reading a few topics, several say that that there connector is broke because they won't connect.

Are the versions that are trying to mate compatible? For example: Version 1 - 4.5 can mate and connect but the V1 -4.5 cannot mate with any of the later versions. You could not have a v3 mate with a v5/.5 or later.
