As long as you don't manage to unpause it while mucking around with buttons, there should be a problem. Pausing causes your tama to go into a state of suspended animation. It will be exactly the same as when you left it.

Be warned that pausing may cause your tama to evolve later etc.

Be weary if you're leaving it with your mother. If your's is anything like mine, she is probably busy during the day and may forget about it. I left mine with her once it was pretty ugly. There's nothing wrong with pausing it, it just takes longer to grow.
