Every character has a different default drawing. I currently have a Robotchi/Androtchi and he always draws this kind of donut shape with some squiggly lines coming out of it.

They are supposed to be gears.

My Mametchi drew a smilie face with a pencil.

My Uramametchi drew a big smiley face with a pen (same thing with a pencil).

The first time I gave him the pen, he had empty speech bubbles (various sizes) above him for a moment as he doodled, but he didn't show me the picture, so I had to give him the pen again, then he drew a second and showed me the big smiley.

I think the pens and pencils are a cute way for your Tama to express his/herself. Usually what he/she draws depends on the character. I had a Tensaitchi once named Zeke and he drew some math equations .

I love seeing them draw, I forget what mine have drawn, smilies that's for sure and other things too ^.^, only with pencil though, never a pen, so congrats!
