I tried sending a present to one of my friends, and he got a random present that I never even owned. How do I send the present that I want to send to him??

Go to the book looking thing press "B" then go to "present" pick if you want to wrap a food or item. Then pick the item you want to wrap by pressing "B" . Pick "yes" or "no".

But what do I do after the present is wrapped? When I connect with my friend and select present, will it automatically give him the present I wrapped?

Yes, it will. Unless your tamagotchi is being bad, but it should.
