Hey guys, I am looking around for a new coloured tama but unfortunately all the prices are high. The reason why I am interested in the tamagotchi 4u is because not only is it the cheapest coloured tama in the market, but Mr.Blinky's app will allow me to patch it to english ( I do have an old phone from 2013 that has NFC so that's not a problem!)

However, I am a bit hesitant because I don't want to buy a tamagotchi for so much money and then finding it not interesting at all.

Do you think it is worth it?

I don't know a lot about this tamagotchi because I haven't been into tamagotchis for a couple years now. Decided to hop back on the bandwagon again :)

Just because your phone has NFC doesn't mean it will work. Only very specific devices work with the 4U, and sometimes even when somebody buys a compatible model it can turn out that it won't work. And the patch isn't even full, from what I know? And the patch is the least important part (seriously, Japanese isn't a barrier on the Japanese language tamas at all, the dialogues are mostly gibberish that's hard to translate and tbh learning the menus is way more fun), it's the downloadable characters and items that would be the most important. Otherwise it would get boring suuper fast.

And it's not really true that it's the cheapest color version- you can get an iD L for way cheaper (granted, when used, not new, but still) and it's way better in my opinion. There's NOTHING to unlock on the 4U and has very little built in stuff in general, iD L has a lot to offer by itself, AND you can download stuff onto it via an IRDA phone, but it's really not required to enjoy it.

I feel like iD L is a very overlooked version for some reason, everybody forgot that it exists, somehow...

That said, just going for the cheapest thing isn't always good. I think it's better to save up for something more expensive but good that can last years, like a P's, but that's just me. And you can find good offers on it sometimes.

Thank you for letting me know about the NFC issue! Unfortunately I am only looking into brand new tamagotchis, forgot to mention it earlier. I do think the id L is great from what I remember, but I cannot find any new ones that are reasonably priced. The language thing - yes, I've heard it is not hard to get used to. Unfortunately, my parents won't let me purchase something that I won't understand and is worth a lot of money (if that makes sense, I have nothing against japanese tamas, they're all so intricate and amazing. I already get backlash for listening to kpop since its korean and I'm not korean ^.^)

I guess I've found myself in a sticky situation huh. Hopefully I could convince my parents to let me purchase one :)

If you're not against getting a used one, I find that IDLs are the cheapest used color tamas ($20-30 USD on the cheaper end).

Thank you :) do you happen to know the best place to purchase tamagotchis? I only ever bought from amazon in the past (couple years ago) but all the prices are soaring high now there!

Best places to buy tamas are either japanyouwant or ebay.

Japanyouwant currently has a good selection of used color tamas, including iD L's and even P's with pierces:

https://japanyouwant.com/product-category/tamagotchi/ps -some of these are VERY worth it. Pierces themselves can go for 60$, and P's 100$

https://japanyouwant.com/product-category/tamagotchi/id-l

https://japanyouwant.com/product/used-tamagotchi-plus-color-white-no-box-bandai -the original +Color version, very good price as they rarely go for less than 100$, quite fun version though pretty basic, but more fun than an iD L or 4U or even M!X imo

The iD's weren't super popular, even compared to the +Color they seemed basic (even despite the downloadable content). They're not super sought after. iD L's were pretty popular on the other hand, but got quickly overshadowed by the P's.
