Maybe you missed seeing the Matchmaker on your tamagotchi screen.

I think the Matchmaker Matchmaker arrives at 10:30hrs, 15:00hrs & 19:00hrs (I am not totally sure of the times) - but I think on the V4 / V4.5 and Jinsei, you must watch carefully for her - she does not stay visible on the screen for a very long time (less than one minute). You have to be ready for her!
