Training affects what character your tamagotchi will turn into. Depending on how many bars of training your tama has, you get different characters.

Not only that - It does make your Tamagotchi behave better:

i.e. It wont poo on the floor as much, It wont give naughty presents when connecting, it wont get into bad moods for no reason
