Your tama has to be an adult and 6-7 years. 
It does not matter about age, it depends on how long it is in the adult stage.
It should come about 48-72hrs after being an adult.
By pausing it takes longer and also when you down-load. Your adults will be 0hrs old because it is reversing back to the last big thing that happened, like when your tam evolved, connected, had low battery etc.
