I feed mine until it can't eat anymore. ^_^ Even if a heart doesn't drop, I'll check whether it can eat or not. If yes, I feed it. That way I don't have to check constantly if it's hunger reaches zero.

I get my Tamagotchi batteries (CR-2023) at London Drugs. You can get them almost anywhere that sells electronics of some sort. I know for a personal fact that connecting with other Tamas drains the battery quite a bit. That could be why your batteries have ran out so quickly.
