Excitedly, the owner of a new version-four tamagotchi pressed all three buttons at once, admist a series of whirrs and clickings. Her mother, who was nearrby, peeling potatoes at the kitchen sink, asked curiously, ''Anna? Have you even read the instructions?'' Of course, she already knew the answer, but, just in case. The reply, a shake of the head. Her guardian resented herself from draining the hot water into the saucepan, and sat beside her on the crook of the kitchen-tables chair. ''Look.'' She took the toy off her daughter, and set the time and date. She also filled in her name and birthday, and the picture on the screen showed a little pixelated egg bouncing on the screen. Suddenly, it wrigglded and squirmed, and there was a gasp........
