can you use caps that you buy from the shop?

well, i bought a cap for my tama ( a.j ) and i went to my items and went to the hat and pressed b to select it, and it made that beeping noise when you cant do something. so i cant where it and i spent alot of money on it. why cant i wear the cap? can someone help?

p.s my tama is at its third stage, and is a nikatchi.

Most items, excluding the ball and food (maybe one other thing?) can't be used until your tamagotchi has reached the adult stage.
