Character on screen with Tama

At 2pm today, 12/8/2006, a character popped up to the left of my tamagotchi. Does anyone know why? It was a little black figure with a hat that had a tassle, or something, swinging left to right above it's head. It's mouth opened and closed too. It sort of looked like a jack in the box.

What is this?
