Chapter 1, “Shadow”

The night sky was brilliantly decorated with a wonderful arrangement of bright stars and three marvelous full moons. The light of the moons illuminated the great Tamatown King’s castle so wonderfully that its inhabitants didn’t feel the need to light the outdoor torches. Which was exactly what a young gozarutchi had been counting on. Eagerly he fixed the neck part of his mask as he peered down at the palace guards from atop the stone tower, shrouded in shadow. It would be any minute now and he would be able to accomplish his mission and return home to his clan, celebrated as a hero. His name, Tatsugi, would be written in the clan’s book of history and he would join the ranks of the greatest gozarutchi warriors of all time. The guards below, two mimitchis, talked lightly about their families histories and the brave members that lost their lives in the clan wars ages ago. They were both clad in a silver armor that had the royal egg and crown symbols affixed in gold in various areas. The guards had been on post for about eight hours now, and were visibly groggy. Their slouched posture and drooping eyelids made Tatsugi smile inside. How easy it would be for him to leap down and defeat them both in their current state, but under strict orders he was not to be seen by anyone. His pride slightly nagged at him saying how much more brave he would be if he abandoned all this cloak and dagger, however the reward for following his orders weighed heavier on his mind. He watched down upon them waiting for the right time.

The mostly silent town suddenly rang out with the tolling of a bell of in the distance. The bell keyed the guards that their shift was over and both of them grabbed their spears that had been resting on the stone wall, opened the great steel doors behind them, and headed into the castle. Tatsugi had been waiting for this exact moment; he had precisely two minutes before the next guards on shift would be at this post. He quickly stepped out form the shadows and took from his belt a grappling hook with a large length of silvery chord attached to it. He looped it around part of the corrugated stone in front of him and clipped a part to his belt. He then tossed the rest down to the pavement sixty feet below and climbed over the edge of the tower. He repelled to the ground smoothly and approached the large doors.

Something startled him in an instant; a clunky metallic sound. Someone was opening the door and he was right in front of it. His heart began to pound faster, to a point where it seemed as if it would explode from his chest. Light from the castle began to softly flood out onto the ground before him, surely he would be caught. The prestige and glory that he had set in his mind now faded away as the door was still opening slowly in front of him…

 To be continued
