Usually only when the heart drops.

I basically try to keep 'em at 3 or 4 hearts. So basically when the heart drops.

I check my Tamagotchi every hour or so, and if a heart has dropped, I'd feed them to the max.

I feed mine until it can't eat anymore. ^_^

Even if a heart doesn't drop, I'll check whether it can eat or not. If yes, I feed it. That way I don't have to check constantly if it's hunger reaches zero.
