Fire, Fire

Fire, Fire, embers bright

In the darkness of the night

What immortal flower or lance

Could capture your glimmering, twisting dance?

In what scalding deeps you lie,

Burning away our inner eye?

On what fuel do you march forth

What do you think our forest’s worth?

And what flames, and what coal

Could bend your noble, noble soul?

And when your spark began to shine,

What dread light? what dread sign?

What the hammer? What the chain,

How many innocents have you slain?

What the dagger? what dread grasp

Dare your fearful enemies clasp?

And when the stars threw down their spears

And tried to kill you with their tears,

Did embers smile their work to see?

Did they who made the ocean make thee?

Fire, Fire, embers bright

In the darkness of the night

What immortal flower or lance

Dare capture your glimmering, twisting dance?
