Well, what do you mean?
If it's a picture for you Avatar, you save a picture, then go to "Avatar Settings". It will say "Browse" and you click on that. You then look for the picture you wanted on there.
If it's a picture in your post or your signature, Im afraid you can't do that.

it says the pic i do does not work for my avatar

Some files won't work for Avatars. Only gif .jpeg .jpg .png .GIF .JPG .JPEG .PNG files are allowed and they can't be any bigger than 30 KB.
