The adult leaves the baby at midnight on the second night - then the baby wakes up in the morning and you name it and start a new Gen.

It dies when it gets old.. which normally is around 20 if it doesn't have kids.

By the way, I really don't know what people are getting all worked up over. It's not like you said you wanted to kill your Tamagotchi... Jeepers people!
