For the IR thing... must the 2 tamagotchi systems be next to each other or can they be far away? Exactly how long?

They have to be relatively close to connect via the Infrared technology.

I doubt you will be able to connect anymore than one metre away, or possibly a little less. I cant tell you exactly how far the IR waves can travel, because it has a few variables which can affect the length of the IR signal.

3-4 inches works for me. The two systems don't have to be touching.
