Odd and Even Generations

I don't understand the whole odd and even generation thing. I know I saw a post/thread about it but I forgot if it's here or on Tama-Zone. I tried looking for it but I cannot seem to find it.

Well... it just means that you get certain characters from certain generations!

e.g. Oniontchi is on the even generations, Hinotamatchi is in the odd! h34r:
