Odd Generation and Even Generation?

So recently, I have been looking for growth charts, and i noticed that there are Odd and even generations, what does that mean?

Basically, on some versions, some characters are obtainable on only odd generations while others are only obtainable on even generations.

Basically what the previous person said, on Odd generations, you can only get that set of characters with an odd number for the generation. Even numbers get even generation characters. For example, Mametchi (on older connections) can only be obtained on an odd gen so you can only get him/her on Gen 1,3,5,7 and so on. You can't get him/her on even gens like 2,4,6,8 and so on.
