Trouble with codes

I know that to enter a code that I have to click the A button a bunch of times at the shopkeeper until it has a troubled look on its face, but I don't know how to enter it. That doesn't seem to be a place where I can enter it. Like when I press the buttons, nothing happens. Help please?

You just need to keep entering the code (a b c buttons) until you've finished. Then you should get the item.

If you're talking about the souveneirs from tamatown, you don't go to the shop, instead you go the the 'password' place in the play section and enter the code.
