Ah now be nice! Not all us old folks are bad. I think I'm pretty nice at 24 and YES I HAVE TWO TAMA'S!!! Sure that makes me a little immature but who cares... I have a brain and I use it. I also don't go around whining about other peoples choice of net slang or bad spelling because I don't care. I think to type that way and figure out what the heck others are saying takes more brains then typing in plain ol' boring English. I can't type netspeak... I'm just not that cool. Anyway hard to read or not it's their choice. If you don't like it join another forum. It's a free country... at least where I live hehe. I don't think it is how you speak or write that makes you a good person it is who you are inside and intelligent or not I'd rather be a good person. Really though whineing about other peoples typing skills, pretty petty stuff and that's coming from a 24 year old with an education. This whole thread is pretty silly. LOL and I'm not going to spell check my message either... So there!

yuo are cool ;)

Net slang? I think I've only read one post that was really difficult to read. I know I write net slang too, but I sometimes do wonder if ppl go out of their way to make them up and make them unique. I think it takes real effort to write that way, and although I have trouble reading it, I try to keep up.

Did ___ know ____ brain ___ doesn't need __ read everything __ understand ____ __ written?

Regarding maturity --- I believe there's a kid inside all of us... ;)

I use it because it's usually shorter, quicker, and most people know what it means.

You want to see some bad net slang? Go to 4chan.org or iichan.net (you might have to be over 18, i can't remember). It's a picture post board, and a lot of it is pornish material. People *invent* slang like "ZOMG TORRENT" (Please put this up for download), "OMGWTFBBQ" (A play on the net slang anagrams 'Oh My God and 'What The F---'), "!!!!1111one" (making fun of internet users who type with lots of exclamation points, and don't keep the shift key down long enough). It's ridiculous.

Also, a lot of the members here are probably young. Younger people use slang.

;) Dude, let people type the way they want to type. If you wanna be Mr.Mature on this talk board, thats fine. But dont push this crap on other people it really pisses me off. Next time plz post something next time that has relevance to tamagotchi, and not to your little indifferences with people

Thank You

I hate to say it, because everyone does have the right to write however they wish... But when I see a post in netspeak I get the impression that the poster of that post is probably younger, therefore possibly not as intelligent or mature. I don't treat them as such, but I get that idea... I know, it's wrong of me. ^_^ I do agree with the starter of this thread, but at a bit of a lesser extent... because netspeak doesn't really get to me, but it does give me a unfair prejudice against someone who may be smart, but uses netspeak.

Soo, yeah... How about them tamagotchis? Mine are in love! ;)

I personally agree with Tamagoyaki(I know I'll regret it later though as I never thought that would happen.). It's annoying and very childish, but all I can do is refuse to read it. It gives me a headache and it's a totally different language. 'its 10 tims hrder 2 red dis' than Japanese Kanji. That was a strain to type like that even. O.O Just stating that it takes sometimes a whole minute or two just to read one of the 'netspeak' words. That's just me, but I like to USE the education that I have gotten, rather than let it waste away. I'm just going on and on, so I'll stop now. Please notice that I did NOT put anyone down or anything as I am sometimes accused of, I simply stated how I felt about the particular 'typing style', if you will.

Honestly!!!!Tamagoyaki! your going on and on and ON so really - your immature yourself!

I have the worlds worst speling sorry, Spelling, and i get really annoyed when people go on about it! if people are bad spellers you cant make them good spellers by nagging them!

Also - if people want to use text talk they can!  sure, i can't read it very well but your writing sends me to sleep.

There's a difference between being a poor speller/typer and being completely unintelligible. Forums are a medium that are dependant on the users ability to create sensical phrases to comprise posts.

I have no problem with typos or poor spellers. I have a problem who are typing in such a way that I can't understand a single thing they're trying to say and they're typing that way on purpose. I don't understand the point of trying to communicate in a text-heavy medium if you won't at least make an effort to do it well.

Yes, you do all have the right to type the way you want to. But, if you want people to understand what you're saying, then try your best to express yourself as clearly as possible.

Edit to add:

Also, there are times when netspeak or whatever it is we're talking about here isn't inappropriate (regardless of the forum or whatnot). When you're in a thread that's very casual, very "chatty", off-topic type threads, that's ok. It's not acceptable if you're in an on-topic thread and you're asking for help/giving advice, because there's a greater chance you'll be misunderstood. As far as I can tell, most netspeak is only shorter than the actual word by like, a letter or two. So, in the interest of clarification, it'd be best to actually type out the word when discussing serious things. But when you're just farting around and having a good time, go ahead and use some netspeak.

I haven't noticed particularly horrible chatspeak here, but then again I haven't been around too long and I'm used to Neopets, anyway. *cringe!* Chatspeak is awful, but I've started going by the rule that if I can't read it, it's probably not WORTH reading. Hey, at least nobody here writes in white text. That's a plus. XD

By the way, I'm 18 and therefore a wrinkley old fogey. Feel free to point and laugh.

God, if you're a wrinkly old fogey, what am I? A mummy? The undead?

Wow, even the living dead enjoy Tamagotchis! :p

Nah, I only said that 'cause a few posts seem to imply that anyone who's no longer in junior high is boring and uncool. (*gasp!* NOO! Not THAT!) Honestly, I haven't found anyone here that I think of as "old". :)

You know what is old? THIS TOPIC. LOL. oops better watch it with that netspeaking btw I LOL means Laugh Out Loud and btw means by the way for anyone not paying attention. I think it is pretty funny that we have to be grammatically correct in a forum devoted to a childrens toy. Give me a break. Altough I guess tama's aren't just for kids if all us old fogies are playing with them. hehe.

Not to be rude or anything....

Some of us aged 12+ over have to do homework. Slang is simply an faster way of getting things done and moving on to more important issues. Like a maths test u have to study for.

I dont really judge people by the way they write. And i agree with CopperEos.

Build a bridge and get over it! lol Kidding im not that mean.

This is an ancient topic, but I'm going to put in my two cents' worth since I'm here anyway.

Personally, 'netslang' and shorthand both annoy me to no end. And I'm guessing that's what it was with Tamagoyaki (am I spelling that right?). S/he wasn't trying to force anything on any of you--s/he was just stating his/her opinion and that's why there was a big RANT WARNING on the topic title. That's why I think it shows immaturaty on the parts of the people who immediately went on the defensive with big texts and all of the OMG U CANT TELL US HOW 2 TYEP.

But yeah, it's your choice how you type and how you don't. Me, I tend to ignore anything that I can't understand the first time through. I haven't /really/ had a problem with that here. Because I can understand that not everybody is a speed typer like me (I'm used to MUDs and MUSHes where you have to be fast, anyway) and it's easier sometimes.

But whatever. I like poking at topic corpses, heehee.

Guess I'll add my two cents. Someone said that playing with Tamagotchis makes one immature, but I completely disagree. Playing with Tamagotchis just shows that you're still a child at heart, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Anyway, net slang irritates me. Mainly for two reasons: it really does not take that much effort to type a few more letters and I find that a lot of people who do not speak English as their first language have some difficulty understanding it. In my opinion, spelling everything the right way is being considerate to other people. And really... you don't save that much extra time typing slang, perhaps a milisecond or two at most.
