Recommend a Music Star, it is a very fun tamagotchi version to play with, but you could just pick, I just recommend that....

If I remember correctly, Tama-Gos are available in stores for ~$20, not $30. If you try to get them online though, that's a different story. Why not get them both? The Tama-Go will probably cost you a bit more than $20, depending on what you have as sales tax, and then just use the left over money to get a Music Star, which go for very cheap on sites like Amazon and Ebay (you can even get one here...there are some TamaTalkers selling Music Stars). The can connect with each other anyway, so why not?

Depending on the store you go to, you could buy two music stars. However it really depends on what you're looking for and how much time you're willing to put into your tama.
