My V3 used to do that, once it did this low beeping while I was asleep and it snuck into my dream ;) (does that ever happen to anyone else?) and the funny thing as I couldn't figure out what had happened for two days, you know how much it sucks to fall asleep to a constant beep for two nights? It sucks, but I felt like an idiot when I finally found the source lol! :D

Was it a loud high pitched dog-wistle type sound? if it was it happened to me too either the battery died or someone hit it or threw it

It's happened to me too. I just take the battery out, shake it (lightly, yes, very, very, lightly) and then put it back in. I think that happens when the acid in the battery builds up in one very particular spot, and then it overloads the Tama's sound circuits or something like that.
