I never really count stitches either. Just see how it looks after each row and decide if it needs increasing or decreasing. I made a cute apple cover that way. He he. The fruit, not the tech.

For a design like that, I think it would be easiest to crochet. If you know how to increase/decrease without following a pattern and most basic crochet, I would try starting with a chain that would make an oval to go around the screen. Increase a stitch or two, (possibly after every three or...
