I never even got the chance to think about these world end things. May 21st 2011 was the day before my 10th birthday and I spent most of it swimming with dolphins in NZ. The world didn't end, I didn't think it would, I didn't even know that anyone thought it would. I was too excited about my birthday.
My point is, if nobody makes a big deal about the world end rumours and not everyone knows about them, fewer people will get all stressed about it. If this point is made clear, nobody will bother spending money on trying to survive the "world ending":
Apocalypse = NOBODY is saved, NOBODY can be saved, no matter what
World war or natural disaster = you CAN save yourself but it's difficult
